Open Source Software projects are created and maintained by a collaboration of volunteer programmers. Some of the most prominent examples of open source software are Mozilla Firefox, the internet address system Internet Protocol, the Apache HTTP Server, and probably the most successful the Linux operating system.
Open Source as a larger movement and an everyday term became widely known in 1998 despite being around since IBM released operating systems and sources in the 1960's. Open source was previously known as "free software" but this term was confusing because the software is not actually free but rather the code is accessible. Therefore, software leaders decided to use the term "open sourc" when Netscape released its code as open source under the Mozilla Pulic License. The Open Source Initiative was then born in 1998 by two leaders in the field. This is when leaders of open source began preaching to large software and technology developers the benefits of freely available source code.
